Dayquil

A major sinus infection has knocked me out of the blogging loop for the past few days. Hopefully I’ll be back in business tomorrow. Until then, we’re trying to stay warm in an unseasonably cold Tampa.

Does it count as a self portrait if you pose and then order your husband to take it for you? Still waiting on that remote…

30 Days, January

Posted in: my work, thirty days | No Comments »

My 30 Day goal for January was to develop my business, Honeysuckle Life. My initial goal was to spend an hour every day on the business, but it turned out that some days were completely void of progress. While others were spent entirely on the business. My biggest success was buying and creating several products for the upcoming boutique. I still haven’t decided what to do with the blog, but I know what I want for the boutique. Expect new listings of Nicaraguan products. Skirts, blouses, scarves, dolls, hand-carved wooden bowls and pillowcases. All with a socially conscious theme. I’ll launch the boutique in the next two weeks. Que fantastico!

Secar, Sentir, Hablar, Comer…

If I could only memorize and apply everything on this shelf, a lot of my life goals would be accomplished. Lanugage, check. Fitness, check. Spiritual, check. Photography, check. Living simply, check. Perhaps the goal should be using what I have, instead of acquiring more.

Fresh Start

Posted in: my work | No Comments »

Natalia spent most of last week sewing items for our little boutique. I’m really excited and nervous. I’ve never done this before, and I’m filled with fear of failure. I keep a mental list of “What’s the worst that could happen.” At this point, it’s not much. I think my biggest fears stem from my dreams not being fulfilled. I want this to be a beginning for me as a small business owner. I want to own a business that empowers myself and the women I’ve built relationships with here in Granada. Sigh.

Muy Delgado!

Posted in: my goals | 2 Comments »

I found a group of photos this week that have been missing for the past seven months. As I scanned through, I realized how much my body has changed since moving here. For the past five years, I have steadily put on weight. I maxed out shortly before moving here, a result of weeks of traveling, eating out and splurging on all the foods I was sure to miss while living in Nicaragua. A pound here and there adds up on a five foot frame, and the 20 lbs that have been added in the past five years have made a huge difference.

Since moving here, I’ve lost a lot of those pounds. I’ve started eating better. My activity level has increased. These are good things. I’m not brave enough to post pictures like this amazing woman, but I have taken them. And I realized today I’m really happy with my body. It’s not perfect, and I have a long way to go. But I like it. I feel confident, strong.

Pie en Fuego

Posted in: my daily life | No Comments »

Our ovens are connected to propane tanks, instead of gas lines. And sometimes that can be a little risky. Sometimes, gas can build up when the pilot light burns out. Sometimes, you can forget this and try to light the stove. Sometime, your foot is close enough to have the hair singed on most of it.

Don’t worry mothers, we’re learning.

Pedaling

Posted in: my daily life | No Comments »

I weave between rocks and puddles on the dirt roads, trying to find the correct street. Instead of the third left, I take the first and second. Wandering through barrios, my basket filled with items for my meeting. It’s a lasagna made of my cell phone, a couple mandarins, a water bottle and camera bag. I smile at the people I pass, trying to look like I know where I am going. I call Natalia twice, explaining where I am. ”There’s a big blue fence and I can see the lake.”

I feel like I can ride for miles, cooled by the strong wind that blows from the lake. I am strong on my bike, almost invincible. I hear the horns honk, vehicles warning me of their approach. I don’t realize how hot I am until I stop. I promise myself, while panting, to slow down on the return trip. By the time I leave, I’ve completely forgotten this promise. I pedal fast towards home.

Freedom

Posted in: my daily life | 1 Comment »

How lovely those days when all you worried over was being a big girl on the rope swing and begging for a few more minutes outside before going home for the night.
